Missouri Administers ACT Free for 11th Graders

On January 17th, the Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education released an eight-page Q&A about changes to the Missouri Assessment Program in 2014-15.

One of the biggest changes outlined by DESE was that beginning in the 2014-15 school year, Missouri’s 11th graders will have one free opportunity to take the ACT college entrance exam in school.

The ACT will be required of these high school juniors, and test results will be used to help determine college and career readiness of Missouri’s students.

All high schools will administer the ACT, including the writing section of the test, at the same time on one day of the week in March and April 2015, though the exact test date has not yet been determined.

The only exception will be Missouri’s 11th grade students who are identified as MAP-A students. MAP-A students show severe cognitive disabilities and will not participate in the ACT.

The state will pay for all juniors to take the ACT one time. That ACT score may be used for college admissions and NCAA scholarships. Students may take the ACT as many times as they’d like at their own expense either before or after taking the state-administered ACT exam.

The state has announced other changes to testing in 2014-15 as well. Overall, these changes will save $3.5 million in testing expenses and will continue to help the state measure progress towards its goal of being one of the top 10 states in the nation for public education by the year 2020.
